South Africa Accelerates 5G Rollout: Bridging the Digital Divide

South Africa is fast‑tracking the deployment of 5G networks, positioning the country as a regional leader in next‑generation connectivity. The government's National Digital and Future Skills Strategy aims to roll out 5G services in major metros by 2025, with a focus on extending coverage to underserved townships and rural areas.

Key drivers behind the push include the need for faster mobile broadband to support remote work, e‑learning, and the burgeoning Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. Telecom operators such as Vodacom, MTN and Telkom have already secured spectrum licences in the 3.5 GHz band, and pilot projects are underway in Johannesburg, Cape Town and the Eastern Cape.

Beyond speed, 5G promises lower latency and higher capacity, which are essential for critical sectors like health, agriculture and finance. For instance, tele‑medicine platforms can now deliver real‑time diagnostics, while precision farming tools can process sensor data on‑site, reducing reliance on costly satellite links.

However, challenges remain. Infrastructure costs, especially for small cell deployment, are high, and there are concerns about the digital skills gap. To address this, the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies has partnered with local universities to launch 5G apprenticeship programmes, targeting youth from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Affordability is another focal point. The regulator, ICASA, is exploring subsidy models and shared‑infrastructure agreements to keep consumer tariffs competitive. Early indications suggest that a tiered pricing structure, combined with community‑owned broadband initiatives, could make 5G accessible to a broader segment of the population.

Overall, South Africa's 5G strategy reflects a balanced approach: leveraging cutting‑edge technology while ensuring inclusive growth. If executed effectively, the rollout could narrow the digital divide, boost economic productivity, and cement the nation’s position in the global digital economy.
